There has never been a shortage of knitting moments in The Office. You can often catch a glimpse of Phyllis knitting away during a sales call. But this week's episode included a subplot that I found particularly spot-on. Darryl receives a hand-knitted beanie from Val on Valentine's Day, which he hopes means she returns his feelings. He goes down to the warehouse to thank her and give her a gift of his own:
Darryl: Notice anything different about me?
Val: You're wearing the beanie! Do you like it?
Darryl: Super comfortable! Like sweatpants for my head.
Nate: I love it, too, Val. It's really itchy, but to be fair my head is constantly itching, so I can't really peg it on the hat.
Darryl: Wow. It's like the Nation of Islam in here.
Val: I like to knit. Don't hate!
It reminded me of when Pete and I first started dating. It was December. A big group of our friends gathered together, many of whom were wearing hats and scarves I had given them over the years. Poor Pete was wearing a raggedy store-bought hat that didn't even cover his ears. I had resisted the urge to knit for him, fearing the boyfriend curse. But after seeing him beside my cozy friends, I was so ashamed of my stinginess that I immediately cast on for a luxurious alpaca scarf that I finished 5 days later.
I gave it to him on Christmas that year. I am proud to say he now has quite an extensive collection of knitted accessories. Now I just have to make him a sweater!
My collection of tv knitting moments just grew by leaps and bounds.
I've been trying to decide if I like the tv show New Girl or not.
One of the latest episodes, Jess and Julia, may have convinced me to keep watching.
Any show that features "Crochet Time" deserves twenty minutes of my week.
Aaaaaaaand now she's knitting, too!
Julia: This is really nice, guys. Thank you for letting me join in. It's totally relaxing, except that I DON'T KNOW WHY if I put the fox through the cave it doesn't--the yarn is broken. I DON'T KNOW WHY this is not turning into...
Jess: Whatcha making?
Julia: A hat...
Jess: If you're making a hat for a baby, it is done.
Julia: Yeah!
Whenever I watch a movie, I try to have my knitting in my hands. It makes me feel productive even when I'm watching something trashy. Whenever anyone (i.e. my husband) catches me watching something I'm mildly ashamed of, I justify it by saying I'm doing research.
Take Grey's Anatomy. It takes some courage to admit that I just spent the past couple of months watching every episode of that abominable show. But it was all in the name of research! What was I researching? Um...knitting, of course!
In one episode, when love doesn't go her way, Meredith swears off men and takes up knitting. Observe:
Stupid Grey's Anatomy. Knitting ≠ celibacy! Well, it did for the first 23 years of my life, but now things have changed. I assure you that sex and yarn can peacefully coexist.
Alex: You knitting like some Jane Austen prune because you screwed Bambi and you have a hidden sister?
Ooh, knitting and scrabble. Great combo.
But Izzy--you knit the guy you like a sweater in a day? And wore it for 3 hours? Yeah-freaking-right. Oh, and ever hear of the sweater curse? If you knit a guy a sweater, you two will break up. That's why Pete still doesn't have a sweater from me. I was waiting until we got married. You can't be too careful. No wonder Denny died! Oops, spoilers.
