yarn along: Little Women

I decided to skip over the Frankenstein episodes of CraftLit and head straight to Little Women.

It's a gem I have listened to before, many times.  I find myself able to recite whole passages along with the narrator.  And yet I miss the cadence of the other reader's voice, even though I don't even know her name.  I try to be patient with the Librivox readers.  I am thoroughly grateful to them, but there are books that will forever be associated with a certain voice in my mind.  Barbara Caruso's version of Anne of Green Gables and Rowena Cooper rendition of The Borrowers, for instance.  I used to check those audiotapes out over and over as a child.  My dream was to become an audiobook reader--that is, once I decided against taking on the veil.  I assumed it was a requirement to memorize the book.  As a result, Barbara and Rowena's intonations are seared into my memory forever, I'm afraid.

In any case, I am trying to be less of a snob so I can enjoy this version of Little Women.  References to knitting abound.  My favorite thus far:

And Jo shook the blue army sock till the needles rattled like castanets, and her ball bounded across the room.

My purple sock that was so obliging just a couple of weeks ago, turned on me suddenly, which forced me to rip back a good deal.  Which meant picking up all of those tiny stitches again and inevitably twisting them all.  I can never remember how to avoid that.

I've taken to stashing different projects all over the house like a crazy person.  Pete's sweater occupies the bedroom.  I've banished that blasted sock to the car.  The beginning of a hat sits in my diaper bag, and a scarf has taken up residence in the living room.  Now of course I'm wracking my brain for something to perch on the kitchen table...
